Subterránea Miguel Hidalgo

Subterránea Miguel Hidalgo guanajuato tunnels

Streets of Guanajuato, Mexico

Ashland and Guanajuato share a lot of things in common–art community, university town, valley nestled in mountains, large tourism industry, etc. One thing Guanajuato has that Ashland doesn’t (does any place other than Guanajuato have this?) are the underground roads. Guanajuato’s tunnels sometimes have daylight overhead like the portion of the road in today’s photo.

The tunnels were originally put in place to reduce flooding and a river of water (and sewage) ran through it until 50 years ago. A dam was then built and the previous water channel was converted into a road for vehicles and pedestrians.

Enchiladas Mineras, Guanajuato style

La Oreja de Van Gogh (Guanajuato, Mexico)

My first night in Guanajuato and I hadn’t eaten much all day. They don’t serve food on airplanes any more, and I even slept through the drink and nuts they sometimes provide. So I wasn’t going to last long walking the streets of Guanajuato on an empty stomach. I saw the Pirates and Marlins on TV, rain began to fall again, and my decision to eat at this place was decided.

I don’t speak Spanish. My waiter didn’t speak English. Guanajuato style enchiladas sounded good. I ordered an Indio to go with it, thinking it may be an IPA. The waiter seemed to ask if I wanted tomatoes in my Indio. With that I changed my order to Sol. A chicken leg came with my enchiladas.

Frescos on the walls were in a Van Gogh style, and the live music hit the spot. The rain came down so hard that the TVs stopped working. I waited until the rain weakened a bit and then headed back to my hotel.

El Meson de los Poetas (hotel) in Guanajuato (Mexico)

This is my fourth time staying in Guanajuato and each time I have lodged at this hotel. This was the first time I ascended to the very back of the property for this view though. Today’s photo is basically a reverse angle, taken a couple hours earlier, of yesterday’s photo.

Wehrmacht @ Musichead (July 10, 2014)

Wehrmacht @ Musichead (Medford, Oregon – 7/10/14)

It’s been nearly a month since Raptor and Wehrmacht buzzed through Southern Oregon. Other than the one photo I posted earlier, I hadn’t looked at those photos until today. Looks like I have a dozen or more decent ones that I need to process…

I’ll get to the rest later. For now I will leave you with this one of the end of the evening. Wehrmacht has a tradition of calling members of the audience to the stage at the end of their set. This makes more sense in venues with a large stage. Musichead’s stage is barely big enough for a small band, let alone audience members and a 5-piece band. However, that didn’t stop Wehrmacht from packing the stage. James Lind, of Sylent Storm, did a fantastic Paul Di’Anno impression as the guest vocalist on this Iron Maiden cover. Members of Raptor can also be seen on stage in this photo.

I’m away from Ashland again for a couple weeks so I will be dipping into the archives or sharing photos from my trip to Mexico for the time being. Today’s photo is from my stop in Denver yesterday (enroute to Guanajuato, Ashland’s sister city).

Tori Amos @ Britt

Tori Amos @ Britt Festivals 2014

Some people are surprised when I tell them I am a Tori Amos fan. They think she doesn’t fit in with my usual musical tastes I suppose, but if they gave her a chance they’d find that her irreverent and edgy lyrics may actually be interesting to them as well.

On top of her lyrics, she has Led Zeppelin playing before, between, and after the show for the audience. Not your typical “pop” artist. Nor do most of my metalhead buddies probably realize that she has covered Slayer’s “Raining Blood.”

I’ve wanted to see her live performance for almost 20 years now, but she has never played in Southern Oregon… until this past Saturday night.

Her show was amazing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take photos after the first two songs so I don’t have any of the lighting that took effect beginning with about the fifth song. Nor do I have any of her playing under the starry sky that came out near the end of her set. Maybe she’ll come back and let me shoot the last two songs next time. 😉
