The Southern Oregon University Men’s Basketball Team plays in the first-round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament in Ashland at the Bob Riehm Arena against Concordia University tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. Hopefully this won’t be their last home game of the season, but it likely will be–even with a win.

This Thursday, Southern Oregon University’s 2012 football team will be the subject of a documentary film. The poster around town advertising the premier of “Team of Firsts” features the above photo which I took last fall.

If you would like to attend the premier on February 21, 2013, head on down to Ashland Street Cinema on Thursday. The movie, produced by “Dose of Dopeness,” will show at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is free.

I’m about to head out for a full day of volleyball. Ellie’s 15U team is in a mOcean Volleyball Club tournament today in Medford. The tournament is for 15U to 18U teams so it won’t be an easy one to win.

Raiders ready to roll over some more opponents this weekend

Foul

Melissa “Moe” Sweat dominated OIT to almost single handedly propel the SOU Raiders to victory a couple weeks ago

Friday and Saturday night basketball games at home this weekend for the Southern Oregon University teams. Friday night is Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Saturday is Senior Night as it will likely be the last home game of the season for the women’s team. The men will likely host at least one Cascade Conference playoff game beginning next week.

Snowshoeing to Grizzly Peak

Shale City Road snow grizzly peak ski poles

This past weekend, after feeling great after an hour-long workout at the Ashland YMCA, I decided to snowshoe up the backside of Grizzly Peak. Normally you can drive to the Grizzly Peak trail head but not this time of year. While there is no snow currently on the Ashland side of Grizzly Peak, there is plenty of snow on the other side.

I parked on Shale City Road near road number 38-2E-9.2. From there the snow was several feet deep so I had no choice but to start. I took today’s photo near that location. A mile later and there were no more human tracks in the snow. From the three-way junction it was just me on the snow, which felt great (like I was Ernest Shackleton or something) but at the same time it was a little scary. There were lots of animal tracks, and it was a Sunday afternoon so I figured it would be next weekend, at the earliest, before anyone found my carcass should I break a leg or should an animal decide I needed to be taken out.

On top of this, fatigue started to set in so I turned around once I got to the parking lot rather than go another 2+ miles to the top of Grizzly Peak. Next time I won’t do a workout before heading for the top, and I should be able to manage the nine-mile, round-trip hike. Nine miles in snow shoes, when you are sinking several inches with each step and gaining elevation half the time as well, is not nearly as easy as walking around town for nine miles.

Sarcalogos returns to Southern Oregon

It has been almost a year since Sarcalogos has played in this part of the world. The show in two weeks with Witch Cult will be the first metal show at the new Club 66. Sure, it’s a Wednesday night and you probably have to go to school or work or something the next morning, but things will wrap up well before midnight–unlike some of the weekend shows at Club 66–so put it on your calendar, copy off some fliers (below), post them everywhere, and head on down to Club 66 on February 27 to support metal in Ashland.

After a bit of SOU wrestling and lacrosse on Friday night, I wandered in to Club 66 to find these two guys on stage. They performed a lovely rendition of The Beatles’ Norwegian Wood which brought back some great memories from a few years ago.
