Upper Ruffey Lake panorama (California – June 2025)

The hike to this lake is a nice day trip from Ashland. About an hour and a half drive south of Ashland, you’ll want to start at the “Pacific Crest Trail – Etna Summit trailhead”. If 4+ miles isn’t enough for you, there are several longer options including summiting Etna Mountain (the far left peak–mostly hidden by trees in the foreground–in this photo), Smith Lake, and/or Meeks Meadow Lake.

I’ve been on Ridge Road hundreds of times in the past 24+ years, but this is the first time I saw it from this location–across Lithia Park walking along the TID near Hearts Nature Trail.

Ashland, Oregon – December 2024

Today’s photo comes from a short hike we did a bit over a week ago on the west side of Lithia Park. We were on the TID (AKA “ditch trail”) between the Granite Street Trail and Hearts Nature Trail. (More on hiking in this area can be found here.) The scene looked as if someone threw lit candles dripping with hot wax at this tree.
