Milky Way

The Milky Way over Beatty, Oregon

I spent a couple nights over Labor Day Weekend at a friend’s ranch in Beatty, about two and a half hours east of Ashland. With no moon, clear skies, and no sizable population within 30+ miles the Milky Way was quite visible with the naked eye.

I am between tripods at the moment so I had to prop my camera up in some old manure to get this shot, a 15 second exposure (to avoid star trails) @ 24mm. Next time I will be sure to have a tripod and my 14-24mm lens so I can go for a 30 second exposure without star trails for hopefully better results.

New SOU dorms are pretty much done

Southern Oregon University – North Campus Village (photo taken just a few weeks before the first students move in to the new dorms)

The SOU campus features several new buildings for students this fall. For the past year they have been building the new North Campus Village dormitories. They are now, more or less, complete, and students will be moving in soon for the new school year which begins later this month.

Jeju pig head

Jeju island in South Korea is famous for its black pig. Apparently they have some pink ones too. Or at least they used to…

I enjoyed a pig in the form of one of the better hire katsu I have had, and perhaps the best katsu I have eaten outside of Japan while on Jeju.

Relay For Life

On my way home from Eugene this past Saturday I thought a lot about my mom who died last month of cancer. I had never been to a Relay For Life event before, but I made a stop in at Raider Stadium in Ashland to check Relay For Life out before going completely home. The atmosphere was very moving. I made two trips around the track with tears coming down my cheeks. It was too dark for anyone to see them. I then took today’s photo before driving the final few blocks home.

PK Park – Eugene, Oregon – Home of Ducks Baseball

On Friday night the Ducks were on top of the world. With a 3-0 lead heading into the 9th inning, and a share of 1st place in the Pac-12 within sight, all seemed to be going their way. The Beavers then loaded the bases in time for this photo. The batter, Danny Hayes, hit a rocket to right that could have evened things up, or put the Beavers ahead, but the ball went foul. The Ducks hung on to win the game and move into a tie for first. However, losses on Saturday and Sunday to the Beavers make it unlikely that anyone will be able to catch the Oregon State team with just three conference games to go.

Back to school day

The return of students to campus after spring break doesn’t have quite the mystique of the start of the school year in fall, but the campus today still has a bit more excitement in the air than normal.

Grizzly Peak photomerge

Grizzly Peak has been a frequent subject on this blog. I have taken photos from this spot on numerous occasions, but this is the first time that I photomerged nearly 180 degrees of scenery from this location including a bit of East Main Street. I stood so that both sets of power lines would run straight from my position once photomerged even though they actually are perpendicular to each other.

On my other blog, I’ll be posting a dozen photos or so from our spring break trip to Yosemite earlier this week. Today’s photo is from early on in the Mist Trail, perhaps our favorite of the several trails we walked.
