SOU on Halloween (2012)

On Halloween I had to give a test during the annual, Ashland Halloween parade. I think this was only the second time I have missed the Halloween parade in 11 years. The other time I was in Japan watching their version of a Halloween parade. Rain was falling for the beginning of the test, but by the time I walked out of my classroom in Taylor Hall at 5:30 the rain had stopped and the campus was empty. Upon seeing this scene I realized I should go get my camera.

I have shown you a photo of this house all decorated up for Halloween on the corner of Morton Street and Siskiyou Blvd before, but this is the first time after dark.

Tonight the Grizzlies play their final home game of the season against Eagle Point High School. Hopefully, it is a little more exciting than last time’s blow out.

SOU autumn

Near the end of the last school year, construction began on a new “gateway” sign for Southern Oregon University on the corner of Siskiyou Boulevard and Mountain Avenue. It took months before the project was complete, but the new sign was ready before courses began again at SOU in September. Now that the landscaping doesn’t look so brand new and artificially placed, I decided to take a photo of it on a glorious fall afternoon earlier this week. The Plunkett Center can be seen a bit through the leaves in today’s pic.

Ashland’s Blue Hour

ashland oregon post-sunset tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 dusk photography nikon d7000

Took a little trip to Jacksonville this past Sunday and forgot my camera. The skies were amazing and downtown Jacksonville was deserted so it would have been fantastic for photography. Alas, by the time we returned home to Ashland the sun had set and the only hope of capturing the glory of the skies on that day was to leave the shutter open for longer than I can hold a camera still. So I headed up onto the roof and set my camera on the top of my chimney for four seconds to achieve this result.

Grizzly Peak is a bit obscured by the tree just to the left of center. I have another photo from a different vantage point on this evening of Grizzly Peak that I’ll post at a later date.

Halloween House revisited

I have shown photos of this house, all decorated up with jack-o-lanterns for Halloween, several times before. Today’s photo is the 2012 version, before the number of pumpkins have become as large as it will as October progresses.

Imagine John Lennon Memorial Central park new York city

John Lennon was born on this day in 1940. Today’s photo is of the John Lennon Memorial, located in “Strawberry Fields” in Central Park in New York City. I took this pic this past summer shortly before visiting The Dakota, where Lennon was shot and killed in 1980. The Dakota is right next to this part of Central Park.

Oakland A’s are in the playoffs

oracle o.co coliseum panorama oakland a's

Has a more unlikely team than the 2012 Oakland Athletics ever made it to the postseason before?

Consider this…
They have the lowest payroll in the American League.
Their starting rotation consists entirely of rookies.
The rest of the team is made up of rookies and castoffs (players not wanted by other teams).
There really isn’t a single player who could be considered a “star”–let alone superstar.
They have the lowest team batting average in all of Major League Baseball.
The Anaheim Angels spent three times as much as the A’s, and it bought them third place in a four team division.
The Boston Red Sox spent even more than the Angels, and it bought them fourth place in a five team division.

Yet, despite all of this, the Oakland A’s have the best record in baseball since July and are heading to the postseason.

Today’s photo is of the Oakland Coliseum (now called the O.Co)–considered the worst stadium in MLB, it’s my favorite place to be. 😉

I took this panorama back in May (when no one believed the A’s would be in their current position). Brandon McCarthy was pitching and Prince Fielder was at bat for the Detroit Tigers.

Ashland High School Volleyball

The high school sports continue today. I’m heading over to AHS in a bit for my daughter’s JV volleyball game. Today’s photo is from a tournament at Phoenix High School a few weeks ago.
