I went to breakfast the other morning at Ashland‘s Morning Glory Restaurant and saw the above haiku painted on the wall. The original Japanese by Matsuo Basho (松尾芭蕉) was
朝顔に
我は飯食ふ
男かな

Opened in 1924, demolished by Godzilla in 1954, Ginza’s Matsuzakaya will really be destroyed in 2013. The doors are closing on the old building early in 2013, and the largest shopping complex in Ginza will be built in its choice location.
I took today’s photo back in 2009. Soon (2016 is when the new building is scheduled to be completed) this scene will look very different.
Saitama Seibu Lions (埼玉西武ライオンズ)
My A’s signed one of my Lions today.
Just over three years ago we climbed Mt. Mitake, and like most mountains in Japan there was a Shinto shrine at the top. Late November is a great time of year to make this day trip from Tokyo as the colors are spectacular, and you can usually see farthest in Japan in autumn and winter when the humidity is low.
Wash basin at Shirakaw Hachiman Jinja – Ogimachi, Japan
Today’s photo is from the loveliest town on the planet, Shirakawago’s Ogimachi. The stickers over the wash basin (temizubachi or 手水鉢) are known as senja fuda (千社札).
