Entropia @ 2019 Brutal Assault on the Obscure Stage

#brutalassault #brutalassault2019 #entropia

Today’s photo features one of the many bands I would have never discovered had they not happened to be playing at a festival I was going to. When unknown-to-me bands get announced at a festival I’m going to I typically add a few of their songs to my phone. If I don’t like those songs I delete them and skip the band at the festival. That was not the case with Entropia. Just the opposite happened. Each time one of their songs came on I was like, “Who is this?!?!” Amazing stuff. For fans of Pelican, Russian Circles, or heavy psychedelic music. Highly recommended with quality, noise-canceling headphones on after your favorite intoxicant has kicked in.

Sadly, at 2019 Brutal Assault, they were on at the same time as Zuriaake and Heilung so I was unable to see the full set of any of those three bands.

Happy birthday, Dave “Old School” Matrise!

The quantity and quality of thrash metal bands at the 2019 Brutal Assault Festival was amazing. Off the top of my head, so I’m probably forgetting several bands, there was Violator, Anthrax, Jungle Rot, Carcass (not exactly thrash but…), Sacred Reich, Testament, Hellhammer, Demolition Hammer, Destruction, Tankard, Exumer, Metal Church, Voivod, and Sodom.

Violator appeared to have been on speed or cocaine or something as they hit the stage almost 10 minutes early (which I’ve never seen a band do at a festival before), played (ran around and talked) like maniacs, and then went overtime (something you rarely see at festivals).

I once owned an original Sepultura “Beneath the Remains” tour t-shirt from one of their first shows ever in the USA. I wish I had taken better care of it as that would be nice to have 30+ years later.

Interesting additions to 2020 Brutal Assault

A few stories about some of the latest additions to the 2020 Brutal Assault lineup…

The first is from just a couple years ago. On Thursday of the 2017 Roskilde Festival I was planning on seeing Oathbreaker and High on Fire. In between I had no plans, but I ran into some friends I had recently met at Copenhell, or maybe this is the night I met them for the first time. I don’t remember. In any event, they said I had to check out Author & Punisher, a one-man band featuring a guy who made his own instruments, and the instruments were far from traditional. There would be no guitars, drums, etc. What an experience that was!

Static-X and Cradle of Filth I learned about from “Iron Mike’s Metal Video” in 2000 and 2001. Iron Mike had a late night, public access show that I would watch after putting my, then little, kids to bed. Static-X was one of the few bands that would play in Southern Oregon so I ended up seeing them a few times while Wayne Static was still alive. I can’t imagine them without him, but maybe I’ll get that chance next summer.

Cradle of Filth reminded me a bit of Sabbat, who I was familiar with since the late 80s, but they seemed to really be pushing things. Ultimately, I became a fan which led to my interest in many other bands including Dimmu Borgir.

Happy birthday, Ihsahn!

Emperor

I didn’t follow the music scene very closely in the 1990s. I went to few shows and didn’t like much of the new music I was hearing on the radio. Also, I was busy with a new career and family. However, I do remember that one night, while searching for something different in the 90s music world, I stumbled upon an internet radio station out of the UK that was playing Emperor. That may have been the first time I heard true, black metal. “I Am the Black Wizards” became one of the few black metal songs that I listened to regularly before becoming much more devoted to the genre in the past 10-15 years.

Finally seeing Emperor live this past summer at Brutal Assault was very special. There was one moment, a few hours before they hit the stage, where I was sitting on a leather couch, in the fortress where Brutal Assault is held, and the members of Destruction were conducting an interview 10 feet in front of me, Ihsahn was signing autographs 20 feet in the other direction, and Au-Dessus was playing the Octagon stage just 100 feet away. Also, the creator of the Emperor logo, Christophe Szpajdel, was giving tours of his art nearby. I thought I was dreaming.
