Opened in 1924, demolished by Godzilla in 1954, Ginza’s Matsuzakaya will really be destroyed in 2013. The doors are closing on the old building early in 2013, and the largest shopping complex in Ginza will be built in its choice location.
I took today’s photo back in 2009. Soon (2016 is when the new building is scheduled to be completed) this scene will look very different.

San Francisco has been forecasted to receive as much as a foot of rain over the next five or six days. Last weekend was beautiful blue skies as evidenced by this photo I took near the end of the cable car line that runs down Powell Street.
A chedi, like a stupa, is a Buddhist building. These, at Wat Pho in Bangkok, were extra impressive under a mix of storm clouds and blue sky.
Speaking of tennis courts, today’s photo is from our apartment building in Tokyo, コート西早稲田. The land was formerly occupied by a bunch of Waseda University tennis courts. Long before that (early 17th Century), Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu built a horse racing track here. Waseda University still owns part, or maybe all, of the place. Notice the double-decker (triple-decker, actually) parking spots. There are cars under these cars.
I think I took this photo because the sky was particularly blue on this fall morning. Perhaps there was a rain storm the night before. Tokyo doesn’t usually feature skies this blue. If you want to see a blue sky in Tokyo, your odds are much improved in the fall and winter months.
The weekend I visited Aarhus, Denmark (July 2011) was not a great one for the weather. However, even though I experienced some cloudy skies and rain in Aarhus, back “home” in Copenhagen things got really nasty and the city experienced its worst flood in history. I’ll post some photos from the aftermath of Copenhagen’s flood one of these days. Today’s photo features the longest and tallest church in Denmark. Building began over 800 years ago and the Aarhus Cathedral was completed about 700 years ago. Aarhus Canal is in the foreground.
My random wallpaper of the day is this image I took on my way from the Torisawa Station (about 70 kilometers from central Tokyo) to the start of the hiking trail I took to get to the top of Mt. Kuratake. The house next door looked like a new home in any suburban neighborhood in the USA, but the owner of this place went with a more traditional Japanese look.
