Japanese lanterns

tenso jinja nishi waseda lanterns

Tenso Jinja (天祖神社) lanterns all lined up and ready for some Bon Odori action

Last month I returned to my old neighborhood near Waseda University for the first time in more than three years. Seeing Tenso Jinja again was very 懐かしい for me. Unfortunately, I left Tokyo before they had the annual event these lanterns were set up for.

Gum wall in Post Alley
Seattle, Washington

I spent the last weekend in Seattle and Portland (looking at potential colleges with Ryan). While I was taking photos of The Market Theater Gum Wall, a couple of Japanese females took turns taking photos of each other blowing bubbles in front of it. I snuck in this photo from a distance.

Great Shrieking Hell (Daikyokan Jigoku or 大叫喚地獄)

daikyokan jigoku fukuoka tochoji

Painting of Daikyokan Jigoku @ Fukuoka, Japan’s Tochoji

This painting represents one of the eight great hells of Buddhism. In this lovely place the tortures inflicted on the sinners are ten times as great as those in the four hells above them and the other sixteen subsidiary minor hells put together. The good news is that you are only stuck here for eight thousand years. The bad news is that one day in this hell is equal to eight thousand years in heaven, and one day in heaven is equal to eight hundred years in the human world.

Korean Tuesday

Beomeosa (Busan, South Korea)

What today’s photo doesn’t show, but when I look at it I’m instantly reminded of, is the heat of a summer in South Korea. Brutally hot and humid, one of the things I liked best about Busan is the subway was never far away. If I became too hot, I just got on one of the air-conditioned trains for a bit to recover.

Japanese girl @ matsuri trying out a water bird toy

More interesting than the fireworks at a summer festival in Japan are the crowds before and after. The people are all in a great mood, and the vendors sell some interesting things. Today’s photo is of one such saleslady. This picture was taken at the 日本ライン夏まつり納涼花火大会. The Japanese girl pictured was demonstrating the whistle sound this toy filled with water can make.
