Roger Waters @ Yankee Stadium
Yankee Stadium panorama from Monument Park
This weekend Roger Waters is performing The Wall at Yankee Stadium twice (Friday and Saturday nights). When I took this photo at a Yankees-Braves game last month they had an advertisement for the second date (which wasn’t sold out at the time) and it gave me goosebumps. Unfortunately, I will not be in New York this weekend, but I have extremely fond memories of seeing this tour in San Francisco.
I took today’s picture from Monument Park in center field before the game, approximately the same place where Roger Waters will be performing The Wall. The photomerge of five pics messed up the netting that protects the monuments from home run balls. I attempted to Photoshop the netting away, but I became frustrated and was ready to delete the images off my hard drive. Then it occurred to me that this isn’t all that different from the wall Roger will be building and destroying in center field this weekend, built on the edges to begin with, fully built by intermission, and destroyed during the second set.

Happy Declaration of Independence Day

My view of American history has changed over the past month. First, I read David G. McCullough’s 1776 which seriously altered my take on the revolution. The year 1776 was actually a very dark period in American history (until the last week) as independence seemed very difficult to come by in July and nearly impossible by mid-December with numerous defeats and retreats.
Seeing the actual places in New York and Boston where some of the events of 1776 occurred after reading 1776 also gave me a new perspective.
July 4 is celebrated as Independence Day even though independence didn’t actually come until the war ended in 1783, and the legal separation from America’s point of view came on July 2. But the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4 so that is the day that stuck.
Today’s photo is of the tombstone of one of the signers of that document, Samuel Adams. His father started the brewery that many know the name Samuel Adams by today. However, the modern Samuel Adams beer of the Boston Beer Company didn’t get started until 1984, despite the commercials which make it look like it has been brewed since the 18th Century.

Today’s panorama of Manhattan is a photomerge of about 10 images. I didn’t intend for this to happen, nor did I notice it until I returned home from New York and looked through some of my photos, but the lady in the foreground on the far left moved between the time I took the first picture and the last pic so that she appears on both ends (in the background on the right) of this panorama! This photomerge covers nearly 300 degrees of mostly Central Park.
Michael Bourn – All-Star Game 2012 Final Vote
Michael Bourn robs Jayson Nix of a possible home run at Yankee Stadium
Major League Baseball has held a “final vote” for the past 10 years, basically allowing fans to pick a player deserving to be on the team who missed the cut in the initial voting process to play in the All-Star Game. This year’s game is next week and Michael Bourn of the Atlanta Braves didn’t make the initial cut. In my opinion, he is the clear favorite to win the final vote contest for the National League.
I took today’s photo a couple weeks ago at Yankee Stadium when Bourn made an absolutely fabulous catch to kill a Yankee rally. After making this catch he almost threw out the runner on first as well.
I didn’t watch ESPN after the game, but this had to be the #1 web gem of the night.
Flying
The first leg of our journey to New York a couple weeks ago included an evening flight to Portland, Oregon (before changing planes to a red eye flight to the Big Apple). Most of the time the sun was so bright (setting in the west and I was on the left side of the plane heading north) that I couldn’t see much. But for the moment when I took today’s pic, the plane’s wing/engine got in the way of my vision and the sun and (ignoring the dirty window) afforded a nice, heavenly view.
