Today’s photo comes from Budapest a few summers ago. I didn’t know this at the time of my visit, but the statue was erected after World War II by the Hungarian people (or maybe the Soviets), and the inscription below it originally read:

“To the memory of the liberating Soviet heroes
the grateful Hungarian people
1945”

Of course, the Hungarians soon came to hate their “Soviet heroes” so in 1989 after the “heroes” were given the boot the inscription was changed to:

“To the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary”.
