Rain drain

Senjokaku’s draining system

A regular rain gutter would not cut it for a place like Senjokaku. For starters, the roof is massive and Miyajima gets a lot of rain.

This ingenious system turns a waterfall coming off the roof into a bedrock stream.

Unfortunately (now, for purposes of this photo, but fortunately then for purposes of my dryness), the rain had slowed by the time I took this photograph so you can’t see the water cascading off the roof so much.

Singing in the rain

Are we having fun yet?

I was jetlagged; I was tired; I was wet. This was about my last shot of the evening on day one of Copenhell before I hightailed it out of there. I got more wet on my bike ride home, much more wet in fact, and lightning struck all around me in flashes and bolts. It was pretty spectacular at times. Riding past the Rundetaarn as lightning was reflecting off its windows was particularly memorable.

Had I been in a better mood I probably would have stuck it out. What got me in a bad mood? Strange I know, but it was not just the rain.

I love it when a band has really good intro music or the song they play over the PA just before going on is great. Take Iron Maiden. You know they are about to hit the stage when UFO’s “Doctor Doctor”, a fantastic song, comes on. I think King Diamond had Black Sabbath playing before he went on the next night. Megadeth had something cool too, but I can’t remember what it was now. Anyway, before the Scorpions went on stage Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” came on the PA. What a crappy song. The skies opened up at that point as if to piss on Metallica’s demise. My mood was worsening. Then the Scorpions came on about 10 minutes late which meant standing in a downpour for 10 minutes more than had they been on time. Finally, they opened with a lame song like “Going Out With A Bang”. Had they opened with something good and played something other than 90s Metallica before that, I probably could have pressed on through the rain. But I wasn’t looking forward to their ballads from the 90s or any more new songs either so I left to the sound of “The Zoo”.

Copenhell Day 1

Day 1 at Copenhell VII (AKA Copenhell 2016) is in the books. Day 2 begins in a few hours. Today’s lineup is a good one. I’m really looking forward to Solstafir. Amon Amarth, Megadeth, Epica, Kadavar, King Diamond, Abbath, and Artillery are also on today’s bill. I haven’t seen King Diamond since the 1980s. Unfortunately, Abbath’s and Artillery’s sets overlap so I won’t be able to see all of them both.

Day 1 was lots of fun until things got wet, very wet. The lightning was impressive. My bike ride home was filled with it too. I wanted to see With The Dead, but I was soaked and headed home for a warm bath instead. Alice Cooper’s set was my favorite of the day.

Hiroshima Castle in the rain

The day after I arrived in Hiroshima, three years ago today, I went for a walk and ended up at Hiroshima Castle. I was hoping to go to the Hiroshima Carp baseball game that night. However, the skies opened up, and the rain came down in buckets. Maybe you can see some of it in today’s photo. I got in a taxi, and the driver told me the game had been cancelled. Luckily there was a day game the next day so I went to it instead. However, that delayed my journey to Osaka which meant that I missed a Koshien game.

Today I’m boarding a plane for Copenhagen so expect some photos from Denmark soon. I’d like to get back to Japan next summer. Anyone have a job for me in Japan for a few weeks or a couple months next year? It need not pay much. よろしくお願いします. 行って来ます.
