I’m thinking about hitting a festival I’ve never been to before in 2019. The Brutal Assault Festival is held at an 18th-century fortress in the Czech Republic in August each year.
The lineup for 2019 is really nice so far and includes Meshuggah, Metal Church, Testament, Anathema, Carcass, Emperor, and Windhand. Tickets are available here.

Dave Edwardson of Neurosis at 2017 Roskilde Festival

Born exactly two months after I was, and possibly at the same hospital (assuming he was born in the east bay), seeing Dave Edwardson walk though the crowd at Copenhell on warm-up day six months ago on his way to the backstage area made me realize it was going to be an awesome day (despite my jet lag).
I would love to see Neurosis do a European tour in July next year.

Clutch is one of the more recent bands that have been added to the 2019 Copenhell lineup. But that’s not where my history with Clutch begins. Earlier this year they played at Roskilde Festival on one of the more enjoyable and memorable evenings of my existence (in part because of the company I was with, Dark Tranquillity being one of my favorite bands, and being blown away by seeing NIN for the first time). But that’s not where the story begins either…
Way back in 2008 we were headed to Copenhagen for me to teach at Copenhagen Business School for the first time. (2019 will be my sixth time in twelve years.) Copenhell didn’t exist yet, and I had never heard of the Roskilde Festival so I didn’t go (which is sad because many great bands played that year including Neil Young, Judas Priest, Radiohead, At The Gates, Slayer, Dengue Fever, and Black Mountain). Anyway, as we were queued up in an airport line in the USA to check our bags to Copenhagen it was obvious that we were in line right behind a band as they had all of their gear, etc. I asked them who they were, and they told me they were Clutch. I had never heard of them before. They were going to play at that same 2008 Roskilde Festival. Seeing them live, for the first time, 10 years later at the very same festival was serendipity or ironic or something.

It’s not easy shooting a band who plays in the pitch blackness, with nothing but head lamps for lighting. Today’s photo was nearly an instant delete (as it was just a small red light as a jpg). However, when I pulled up the RAW file and lightened it a bit this pattern over the image appeared. Anyone know the source of this design? Given that it isn’t coming from the light, is it from my camera’s sensor, the lens, or just a ghost?
