Halloween house decorations featuring jack-o'-lanterns, cobwebs, skeletons, and more

My neighbor has been putting out jack-o’-lanterns again this year, but not at the rate of some prior years. I was wondering why there were baskets on top of these pumpkins until we put one out in front of our house the next day. Within minutes, deer were all over it. Maybe that’s why the numbers of jack-‘o-lanterns are down.

Mt. Shasta from Mt. Ashland

Dusk settles in over Mount Shasta

Mt. Shasta is the wrong direction to watch the sunset from Mt. Ashland, but this is what it can look like at dusk from the northwest. I still need to get up there to see what it looks like at sunrise.

Fire in the Plunkett Center

Police tape surround Plunkett Center on SOU campus after fire

Yesterday there was an early morning fire in the Plunkett Center (Chappell-Swedenburg House built in 1904) on the corner of Mountain and Siskiyou. Luckily there were no injuries and the building wasn’t lost.

Paulina Plunge Waterfall

Paulina Plunge Tour Waterfall

Today’s photo is of the first waterfall we encountered on the Paulina Plunge Tour near Bend in August. It was the only waterfall we didn’t jump in.

Eden Valley Orchards

Grapes on the vine at Eden Valley Orchards - Medford, Oregon

The Rogue Valley has historically been known as a Mecca for pears. With global warming it may become the Napa Valley of the 21st (or 22nd?) Century. The number of wineries has grown substantially in the past couple decades.

A couple days ago I was at a conference at Eden Valley Orchards, also home to the EdenVale Winery, and the ripe grapes looked about ready for picking.

Mt. Thielsen

Mt. Thielsen from Highway 138

Not far from Crater Lake, but even closer to Diamond Lake, is the unusual Mt. Thielsen in Southern Oregon. The volcano that created the mountain has been extinct for a quarter of a million years and glaciers did a number on the rock, leaving this strange-looking shape.

I took today’s photo on our way to Bend last month.

Grizzly Peak Sunset

Sunset from Grizzly Peak looking north (East Medford and beyond)

Another photo today from my recent dusk hike on Grizzly Peak…

With the sun low in the sky the flowers, and even the ground, really lit up into some amazing colors.

Dusk hiking on Grizzly Peak

Hiking Grizzly Peak at dusk

Last night we went for a little hike on Grizzly Peak and timed it so that we’d get to the side facing Ashland about the time the sun went down. The views were even better than I had imagined, and the way back down in the dark (we had flashlights and headlamps) wasn’t bad either.

The stars from the Grizzly Peak Trail parking lot were amazing too. The Milky Way was clearly visible, and it wasn’t cold.

Ashland sunset

Had some interesting clouds the other day so I decided to head over to the other side of the freeway with my camera, new ultra wide-angle lens, and tripod to see what kind of sunset would be offered up. It was a good one!
