Raiders ready to roll over some more opponents this weekend

Friday and Saturday night basketball games at home this weekend for the Southern Oregon University teams. Friday night is Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Saturday is Senior Night as it will likely be the last home game of the season for the women’s team. The men will likely host at least one Cascade Conference playoff game beginning next week.

Snowshoeing to Grizzly Peak

Shale City Road snow grizzly peak ski poles

This past weekend, after feeling great after an hour-long workout at the Ashland YMCA, I decided to snowshoe up the backside of Grizzly Peak. Normally you can drive to the Grizzly Peak trail head but not this time of year. While there is no snow currently on the Ashland side of Grizzly Peak, there is plenty of snow on the other side.

I parked on Shale City Road near road number 38-2E-9.2. From there the snow was several feet deep so I had no choice but to start. I took today’s photo near that location. A mile later and there were no more human tracks in the snow. From the three-way junction it was just me on the snow, which felt great (like I was Ernest Shackleton or something) but at the same time it was a little scary. There were lots of animal tracks, and it was a Sunday afternoon so I figured it would be next weekend, at the earliest, before anyone found my carcass should I break a leg or should an animal decide I needed to be taken out.

On top of this, fatigue started to set in so I turned around once I got to the parking lot rather than go another 2+ miles to the top of Grizzly Peak. Next time I won’t do a workout before heading for the top, and I should be able to manage the nine-mile, round-trip hike. Nine miles in snow shoes, when you are sinking several inches with each step and gaining elevation half the time as well, is not nearly as easy as walking around town for nine miles.

After a bit of SOU wrestling and lacrosse on Friday night, I wandered in to Club 66 to find these two guys on stage. They performed a lovely rendition of The Beatles’ Norwegian Wood which brought back some great memories from a few years ago.

I have never really watched lacrosse before, not even on TV. I wasn’t planning on watching lacrosse on Friday night either, but the parking lot was full for SOU wrestling so I had to park in the stadium parking lot. Walking to the Bob Riehm Arena from there meant walking through this lacrosse match. Things seemed really exciting, and I would have liked to have stayed longer; however, it was 35 degrees outside, and I came prepared with no coat, gloves, or long johns.

The 2nd-ranked Southern Oregon University wrestling team scored a 26-19 victory over Simpson University (Redding, California) last night in Ashland. Tonight at 6 p.m. the Raiders will host rival Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon) in the annual Senior Night dual.

Fu*k! A Monster

Fuck! A Monster @ Club 66 in Ashland, Oregon

Opening for 100 Watt Mind last Saturday night @ Club 66 was a band called “Fu*k! A Monster”. The punctuation in their name is very important because “Fu*k a Monster” has a completely different connotation than “Fu*k! A Monster”. In any event, a couple of their members are also in FatherDoug, who I wanted to see play later in the evening. Unfortunately, evening turned into morning, and I had to wake up by about 7 a.m., so I split after 100 Watt Mind at about 1 a.m. and missed Father Doug.

During the two days I spent in Eugene late last week we saw almost 12 seconds of blue sky. Today’s photo (a photomerge of six photos actually) captures about half of those seconds.

If this looks familiar and you’ve never been on the campus, it may be because ESPN’s College Gameday has set up in this location on more than one occasion.
