The Last Musichead Show

sanctifyre musichead

Sanctifyre @ final Musichead gig (8/10/15)

Musichead in Medford has been a hub for rock, metal, and punk bands to play for more than a decade. I have posted hundreds of photos from shows at Musichead over the years. I have hundreds more that I need to post when I get the chance. The store is still open. You can still go to Musichead to buy CDs, shirts, etc. However, there will be no more shows there after last night as the building owner is renting the concert space to another business. Hopefully bands that would play Musichead will play at Club 66 in the future.

I have so many fond memories. Some highlights include Giant Squid, Wehrmacht, Michael Graves, Ceremonial Castings, and Stoneburner. Even Mastodon played at Musichead back in 2004. I will miss my Musichead evenings.

BTW, although this was Sanctifyre’s first show at Musichead, members of Dark Confidant and Toxic Witch (photos coming someday) who have previously played at Musichead make up Sanctifyre.

The group in the raft in today’s photo sang most of the time as they made their way down the Rogue. Great acoustics in the river it turns out, and their voices were good too.

Umpqua Elk

Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area (Highway 38, Oregon)

We are currently in Seaside, Oregon for the 34th Annual Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament. Today’s photo comes from our drive to Seaside. We decided to take Highway 38 (between Roseburg and Reedsport) because we never had before. Along the way we saw a couple fields on the left side of the highway (the right side was the Umpqua River) with elk.

Blossom Bar

Rogue River’s Blossom Bar

#mynwrcphoto @NWRafting

Today’s photo features our trip leader, Dustin of Northwest Rafting Co., taking a duckie (AKA single-person raft) down the river’s most difficult rapid. On average, more than one person a year dies in these rapids. We all made it through without even capsizing. However, only the guides rode the single-person rafts down. The private group after us wasn’t so lucky. They were all OK though.

Once upon a time, Blossom Bar was impassable. Glen Wooldridge made Blossom Bar passable in the 20th Century by using strategically placed charges of dynamite. He would row up to a rock, drop dynamite onto the other side of the rock, and then quickly row away. He repeated this process until Blossom Bar became configured the way it is today.

Ekstasis @ Club 66

Ekstasis @ Club 66 on August 3, 2015

Monday night was a strange one at Club 66, strange but very good. Three touring bands, not on tour together, met up for an evening in which no band sounded anything remotely like any of the others, yet everyone seemed to enjoy the wide variety of music. Photos of the other bands (OVVL and Cloak) coming soon.

You can catch Ekstasis tonight (August 5) in Salem @ The Wisp House, tomorrow (August 6) in Portland @ High Water Mark Lounge, and Friday night in Seattle @ Vermillion. Prepare to be moved.

I’m looking forward to listening to my new copy of The Book of Longing on my drive to Seaside, Oregon tomorrow.

I took today’s photo as the Ashland High School football team was playing a team from the land of the rising sun. The Japanese flag features a sun of a similar color.

After a week of activity, the Japanese football players will be heading home today. I hope they had a good time despite the smoke of the past few days. Maybe I should plan to join the team that goes to Japan from Ashland in two years.

More photos from Friday’s game can be found here.

I have never come back from a vacation with so many bumps, bites, bruises, and burns, but the memories are fantastic. I’ll be posting more photos from our four days on the Rogue River here and here.
