We just got back from a couple of days in Brookings on the Oregon Coast. The forecast was for non-stop rain, but we got lucky a for an hour or so with a bit of sun. This beach is about 3 miles south of the entrance to the Chetco River. It’s actually just a bit north of the Crissey Field State Park. You probably can’t access it easily without renting a place that is on the beach.
I have shown you a picture from this location on this November morning before, but I think I like the sky in this version a little more.
Blue sky normally means instant death to snow in Ashland, but we were treated to a rare spectacle in late February. Today (March 9) Grizzly Peak, although still snow capped, looked a bit green and we hit 60 degrees, a sure sign that Spring is not far away.
Today was raining, but this past weekend featured some really nice blue skies to go along with snow. I’ve shown this view before. It’s the scene from my dining room while I’m eating breakfast. Every day looks different and this one was a good one.

I don’t know where all the ducks are in this recent photo, but usually the upper duck pond in Lithia Park is teaming with them. Since returning from Japan, I’ve noticed the duck pond to also be well stocked with koi. Also, the water is no longer green. When did these things happen?
This shot could have been really good had I been on the roof in the lower left corner instead of behind it. I took this from Glenview Drive, near the corner where it meets Hillcrest and Vista, looking north. You can see the Ashland Springs Hotel and the Ashland Elks Lodge, built 101 years ago, in this photo.
I went for a walk yesterday in the late afternoon. This was the view looking north (and maybe slightly west) towards Medford from above the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The sky was going through sort of a pre-sunset. The clouds seemed to be coming off the mountain, almost like a fire.
On New Year’s Day I climbed up on the roof to enjoy a 360 degree panorama of the mountains surrounding town. This was the view to the northeast. Grizzly Peak is snow capped for much of the winter.
Several times, since moving to Ashland more than 10 years ago, we have experienced a “fog freeze” where it will get foggy and then the temperature drops to below freezing. The plants and trees turn white until the temperature rises above freezing when the frozen fog that has clung to them melts.
This year the fog freeze has happened at least twice already, including today. Sometimes, if you are lucky, the fog will lift to reveal blue skies. The fog freeze usually melts very soon once blue skies appear so you have to be quick to catch the beauty of the white trees with blue sky background.

I’m not sure if this is Rime Frost or Hoar Frost. Does anyone know the difference?
