tower of london performance

Tower of London actors in period costume

Throwing it back for this Thursday to that time I built a time machine and went back 600 years to the Tower of London.

Seriously, though, the actors are the best part of the Tower of London these days–very fun performances in excellent costumes.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral

Even though many of London’s attractions are free, a visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral, just over the Millennium Bridge, will set you back £18. We didn’t have to decide whether we wanted to pay the fee as we arrived after 4 p.m., and they were closed for the day.

HMS Belfast and JDS Kashima framed by Tower Bridge

JDS Kashima (3508) and HMS Belfast in the Thames River

When I took today’s photo I didn’t realize its significance or rarity. I took it merely because the war ships were nicely framed by the Tower Bridge from my vantage point at the time (on a ferry boat moving in the middle of the Thames).

However, with a bit of research I realized that the Japanese navy warship, JDS Kashima, is not normally in the Thames. It squeezed under the Tower Bridge and moored alongside HMS Belfast (which is a museum in the Thames) for just a few days last summer.

One year ago…

Lemmy of Motorhead @ London’s Crobar

My image is of agony, my servants rape the land
Obsequious and arrogant, clandestine and vain
Two thousands years of misery, of torture in my name
Hypocrisy made paramount, paranoia the law
My name is called religion, sadistic, sacred whore.

Lemmy died a year ago today. Four days ago (on his birthday) I watched one of his final performances on AXS TV. I cried.

Of course, he’s looked liked he’s been on his last leg for decades, even when I last saw him (on the Orgasmatron tour early in 1987). However, it should have been plain to anyone who was at one of these last shows, or who saw the video before he died, that he didn’t have more than weeks or months in November of 2015.

Today’s photo comes from after his death. I took this pic this past summer when I was at a rock ‘n roll bar in London. Great place, BTW. I meet a friendly chap at Crobar, who was from across the Thames, who paid for all of my drinks.

According to Flickr “favorites” these were my top five travel photos of 2016. Not all of the photos were taken in 2016; rather, these are the photos most “favorited” in 2016.

Elgin Marbles

Parthenon Marbles in the Duveen Gallery of the British Museum

At some point the Elgin Marbles will make their way back to Greece as their presence in the British Museum seems very wrong. At that point, I’m guessing admission to the British Museum will go from free to 30 pounds as they can’t exactly charge people to see stolen property currently.

Today’s photo features marble sculpture created about 2,500 years ago on the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens. If you look really closely you can see holes in certain places. These weren’t from destruction in transport. Instead, these are original and were there to hold objects that are now missing like horse bridle, reigns, etc.
