Delicious sandwich (デリシャスサンド) on bullet train with Mount Fuji water

The food you can purchase on Japan’s shinkansen (新幹線) is actually pretty good. And instead of having to pick one sandwich, you can purchase a variety pack with four mini sandwiches. The crust has been carefully cut off of each, making you feel like a four-year old again. 😉
Udon with beef
I had two nights in Kyoto last summer. I asked my innkeeper for a recommendation of a fun izakaya in the (Nijo Station) neighborhood and she recommended Daruma (908 Koyamacho, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto). She was correct. Daruma was tons of fun. Both of the Mama Sans and the customers were entertaining. Pictures coming soon.
So the next day I asked her for a similar place and she recommended Saiya. With kanji like 祭家, how could it not be a party? Well, it wasn’t as fun as Daruma, but the family running the place were baseball diehards so we did have fun chatting about baseball while watching games on the TV.
Asano (tempura, sashimi, etc.) in Yanaka (Tokyo, Japan)
Back in 2007 I returned to Japan for the first time after a nearly 20 year absence. On our second night we ate at a Izakaya near our hotel called Asano (浅野 or あさの). When we lived in Japan in 2009 and 2010 we ate there again. But today’s photos come from last summer when I enjoyed my third meal there.

The owner is very friendly. He remembered me from each of my prior visits like any good Izakaya proprietor would.
Japanese tempura
Hopefully I’ll get the chance to partake again in the not-too-distant future.
I love bacon. I love a good pulled-pork sandwich. However, I don’t like to see where these items came from. I like to buy my bacon sliced and wrapped in a refrigerated section of a grocery store, not outside in a plastic basket (for who knows how long) on a hot and humid day with bugs swarming and smells so intense that your nostrils are singed. Marketing is a bit different depending on the culture I suppose.
Mirakutei ramen in Portland, Oregon
Whenever we visit a “big city” these days we try to find the best ramen they offer. Ten years ago such a thing would be impossible in the USA, but there are now decent ramen shops in some places. Portland is one of them. This time we tried Mirakutei (味楽亭). The waitresses were all Japanese. The cooks were Mexican, but the ramen was still authentic.
Three of us had the, above pictured, Tonkotsu Ramen. One other went with the Original. Everyone was satisfied. The Original is your more typical Japanese ramen. The Tonkotsu is subtle but still wonderful.
