Shirakawago Gasshozukuri dinner @ Hisamatsu Minshuku
I’m not normally a big fan of seafood, but this dinner on the evening we spent the night in Shirakawago in a tradional, thatched-roof home was fantastic. I think the local rice was the best I have ever had.
Tucked down one of Kofu‘s many alleyways (Nishiki Dori was the name of the street) this place looked like a lot of fun. The food was good, but the patrons and employees weren’t nearly as entertaining as the place I had just come from (Ajimi or 味魅).
Ajimi was a random find. The just as random salaryman (サラリーマン) who sat down next to me came up with the name of my boss (Shibuya San) from 20+ years ago in San Francisco when I couldn’t think of it. Weird. It’s a small world.
Today’s random desktop image of the day comes not from Japan but from a trip to Napa we took early last year. The displays of candy, chocolates, desserts, and other things designed to put a few pounds on a consumer were mere eye candy for me.
The morning I headed out for Koyasan from Osaka I figured I would just find some breakfast along the way. By the time I arrived at the Shinimamiya Station for the train transfer I was starving so I purchased some gyoza and ate them on the platform. They were delicious. On my way back from Koyasan I found out the same station also had the above eating possibility.
This type of eating is known as tachigui (立ち食い) (literally, standing eating), and you can do it in Japan at numerous places including the Nankai Soba (南海そば) pictured here.
Two things can get you through Japan’s hot and humid August–the annual high school baseball tournament and shaved ice. I enjoyed both at the top of the Shosenkyo Ropeway near Kofu.
