Metallica’s “no-repeat weekend” tour is picking up in Detroit tonight and Sunday. Every night has a different piece of artwork that shows up on posters and t-shirts. With 80,000 in attendance (and thousands more who weren’t in attendance who collect such things), you’d think they’d want to maximize profits by printing as many as they could sell. Instead, they printed just 550 each night. People waited in line for hours to be first in the stadium (hours before the openers took the stage) to purchase them even with no general admission seating. The posters were already sold out thanks to security buying them up before the gates opened. They then flipped them on ebay for more than 10X the original price.

I’m feeling rather fortunate to have seen last weekend’s Metallica shows as this weekend’s concerts didn’t go well in Arizona. Friday night’s set was cut short (no Master of Puppets!) due to James not feeling well, and then today’s extravaganza was completely cancelled when he was diagnosed with Covid-19.

Back in the early to mid 1980s I was a huge fan of Metallica. Ride the Lighting and Master of Puppets will always remain masterpieces in my opinion. Kill ‘Em All is also very good. Justice is just OK and then I lost all interest in everything that followed.
The last time I saw them live was in the 1990s. I’ve had numerous chances to see them since and have passed. I’ve even been staying at the same hotel they were at a couple of times while traveling and still didn’t bother to attend. So seeing them in 2023 wasn’t exactly my idea, but I did finally get roped into seeing them again on the M72 World Tour–two nights with two totally different setlists. Tonight is night two.
The good news is I still adore the Cliff Burton era stuff. The other good news is that if I need to pee, I have opportunities that I don’t have with bands that play only songs that I love.
