Gluggafoss (AKA Merkjárfoss) is probably not normally worth the effort as it isn’t on the ring road, and is a bit of a detour to get to, but I was staying at a nearby guesthouse anyway that night. The upside is that there are few tourists.
Time of year may also play into your decision to visit or not. Most photos on the internet show a more depressing (brown) scene. I think it’s only this green in late July and August.
This year’s festival is the 40th annual and takes place this Saturday (August 10, 2019). If you happen to be in Japan, you may want to head over to Inuyama for a wonderful evening. Lots to do during the day in Inuyama as well, including the Meiji Mura open air museum.
