Memorial Day

grave busan lyman tomlinson UN Memorial Cemetery

Lyman Tomlinson grave in the UN Memorial Cemetery (Busan, South Korea)

I went to the UN Memorial Cemetery for the Korean War in Busan last July. It’s a cemetery in Korea for Korean War participants from a dozen countries or so. Very few of the graves are for Americans as most of those were moved to the USA long ago.

The experience was very moving. Several Korean people there asked me where I was from and when I told them the US, they were very thankful. When I told them my dad was in the Korean War they were even more appreciative. I explained that my father’s job during the war was more or less a desk job in Japan, but they said they didn’t care. The fact that he was involved in any way was all that mattered. One guy got down on the ground and started bowing and crying. He made me cry too.

Ducks need just one win today to go to College World Series

Oregon Ducks Softball Janelle Lindvall

Oregon Ducks Softball – Janelle Lindvall

@jlindvall26 Oregon had no problem with the Golden Gophers yesterday, easily winning 10-2. Courtney Ceo was the offensive hero, leading off the Ducks’ half of the first inning with a home run, but since I posted a photo of her yesterday, today’s photo is of one of last weekend’s stars (when I took this picture), Janelle Lindvall, who had a two-run home run against Wisconsin. Janelle also had a good game against Minnesota with two hits and an RBI.

Today’s game is at 2 p.m. on ESPN. If Minnesota pulls off an upset, they’ll have to beat the Ducks again on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. PST.

Game 1 of the NCAA Super Regionals (with the winner of the series between Oregon and Minnesota going to the College Softball World Series) will be televised tonight at 7 p.m. (PST) on ESPN2. Tomorrow’s game at 2 p.m. will be on ESPN. If you are in Eugene and don’t have a ticket, TV will be your only option as these games have been sold out since Wednesday morning.

Ancient architecture on a modern foundation

Shofukuji 聖福寺

Butsuden (仏殿) @ Shofukuji (聖福寺) – (Fukuoka 福岡)

In a country that rains as much as Japan, a wooden foundation for a structure isn’t going to stand up to the elements well. On the other hand, a concrete foundation like this one may take a little something away from the 400+ year old building it supports. Originally built in 1589, this temple appears to have been freshened up fairly recently.

Inside this structure are three golden Buddha statues. Every month on the 15th a ceremony is held here.

Cheridan Hawkins is the fifth Oregon softball player to earn Academic All-America honors in the history of the program. She is a sophomore with a 3.70 GPA and was also named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year in 2014.

A’s have best record in MLB

Jed Lowrie and Mike Gallego of the Oakland A’s

@Athletics Once again, it’s nice to see the have nots beat the haves. The Oakland Athletics are currently ranked #26 in payroll but #1 in winning percentage. Similar things could be said for them for most years of their existence. Today’s photo includes Mike Gallego, the current 3rd base coach, who played for some of the low-budget, lots-of-wins A’s teams of my youth.
