Koyasan prayer banners

prayer flags banners in koyasan station

These paper slips hanging from the train station (either Gokurakubashi or Koyasan, I don’t remember which) ceiling on Koyasan contained a variety of thanks and wishes. The person who hung the one on the left wanted to lose 3 more kilos while the person to the right was merely thankful and grateful for their Koyasan experiences.

Chonnam Back Gate after dark

Gwangju’s night life areas required a long bike or taxi cab ride to get to from my residence on the Chonnam National University campus. The back gate neighborhood was the only exception, but with my lack of language skills I could never find anything fun to do or anyone to talk to in this part of town (with Corona being the only exception).

Speaking of Gwangju, if you happen to be in the area, one of my photos was featured as the April 2014 Photo of the Month in Gwangju News.

I don’t think a date for this year’s International Show has been officially announced, but I’m guessing it will be May 1, 2014.

Ramen in Portland

Mirakutei ramen in Portland, Oregon

Whenever we visit a “big city” these days we try to find the best ramen they offer. Ten years ago such a thing would be impossible in the USA, but there are now decent ramen shops in some places. Portland is one of them. This time we tried Mirakutei (味楽亭). The waitresses were all Japanese. The cooks were Mexican, but the ramen was still authentic.

Three of us had the, above pictured, Tonkotsu Ramen. One other went with the Original. Everyone was satisfied. The Original is your more typical Japanese ramen. The Tonkotsu is subtle but still wonderful.

Mirakutei is east of the river on Burnside.
