SOU vs Marian (part 4)

Tomorrow the Raiders and Knights will meet for the fourth time. The first three were National Championship affairs. While this one isn’t for a National Championship, it will still be a little sweeter game to win than one against a random opponent. And the winner may get a shot at a National Championship, but it will take several more wins after one on Monday to get that far. Game time is 11 a.m. PDT. More details here.

Last summer this happened. This summer I will be missing most of Britt because I will be out of the country. I do hope to catch a few Britt Festival shows in late August and September though.
Muir Creek in winter

As I mentioned a couple days ago, my first goal on my snowshoeing adventure last week was to see Muir Creek Falls in winter. There isn’t a single photo of the place in winter on the internet. The normal trail to the falls is 3.9 miles each way. I wasn’t up for 8 miles in snowshoes, especially since I had a late start and wouldn’t be arriving until late afternoon. So, in looking at a map, I decided to try to get there from the Claude Lewis Trailhead / Sno-Park parking lot. The two places appeared to be only about 1,000 feet from each other on Google Maps.
The parking lot was easy to find and well plowed. I was the only person there. There were no trails or prints of any kind so I had to forge my own path, something snowshoes are pretty good for. The snow varied from a few feet to over 10-feet deep in places. The snow was very soft, and I sank 6-12 inches with every step, even with snowshoes. Although the going was mostly flat, after 1,000 feet or so I came to the scene shown in today’s photo. Muir Creek was right in front of me, but it was a hundred + feet down with no trails or feasible way to make the descent.

Thursday I headed to Crater Lake, and surrounding areas, with two goals. I failed to reach either goal.
My first goal was to snowshoe to Muir Creek Falls from the Claude Lewis Trailhead parking lot. Didn’t quite happen. More on that later.
My second goal was to capture a sunset, for the first time, at Crater Lake. Today’s photo is as close as I got. Those clouds on the right covered the lake and turned into thick fog as well just minutes after I took this photo. I had high hopes too, as Crater Lake looked like this less than an hour before sundown.
Y&T returns to Grants Pass

It took Y&T over 40 years to play in Grants Pass for the first time. Now they are returning, less than a year after their debut. March 26 is the date. The Rogue Theatre is, again, the place.
Updated road to the finals

The Raiders have advanced to the Final Four (for the first time in nearly 20 years and for just the second time in school history) with last night’s victory over Tabor. Details here.
Morningside lost (at home) which means the Raiders will be the only team with two or fewer loses once the season is over. Massey still has Morningside at #1, but the coaches will put them at #5 in the final poll since they didn’t reach the Final Four.
Massey has SOU as an 8-point favorite over Goshen, a 5-point favorite over Marian, and an 8-point favorite over Mount Marty. However, Massey doesn’t consider the injury to conference MVP Ashley Claussen. I don’t know if Claussen is healthy enough to play like her normal self or even at all.
If the Raiders can get past Goshen, the final match up will be interesting as the Lady Raiders can indirectly avenge either the Southern Oregon football loss to Marian or the men’s basketball loss to Mount Marty.

The Raiders take on Tabor today at 4 p.m. PST. RedZone is the place to watch the game. You may want to get there early if you want to be sure to get a seat.
Massey gives SOU a 78% chance of victory and predicts a 9-point spread. Tabor is from a weak conference. While they have beaten up on their conference opponents, they have not fared very well playing other teams. Briar Cliff, who SOU beat yesterday, is similar to the Raiders, and Tabor lost to them at home. Tabor barely (the score on the bracket is wrong) got past unranked Asbury in OT yesterday, even though Massey had Tabor as heavy favorites.
Massey has Dakota Wesleyan as a 66% favorite over Goshen. Dakota Wesleyan is 0-2 against Brair Cliff so the Raiders will welcome a match up with Dakota Wesleyan in the semifinals.
Ice Walker
Last week I posted a photo from the edge of Lake of the Woods. This was from a walk I took last weekend in snow shoes.
Today’s photo is from the middle of the lake after I ventured out past the shadows. In the shadows there was snow on the ice, and things felt more solid. I probably could have kept going straight across to my car near the lodge in the distance, but as the ice became more transparent I figured my adrenaline levels were high enough so I turned back at this point and walked around instead.
