In late May I flew down to Oakland in a friend’s private plane. Soon after takeoff from the Ashland Municipal Airport this was the view out the window.

Mount McLoughlin from Peabody’s Wayback

I went on my third snowshoeing adventure yesterday. I parked at Buck Prairie, snowshoed Peabody’s Wayback, and the location above is at or near Peabody’s Lookout. I never saw a sign that said Peabody’s Lookout so I may not have actually made it there. The trail ran out at this point so I headed straight down the mountain and ended up between the restroom and Natasha’s View on the map so I figure I was close to Peabody’s Lookout.

In the distance in today’s panorama photo you can see a portion of snowed over Howard Prairie Lake and beyond that Mt. McLoughlin on the left and Brown Mountain on the right. Next time I’ll have to bring my 70-300mm lens instead of my 14-24mm lens for a much more close up view of these beauties.

Fishing anyone?

Today’s photo is from last week’s trip to the Howard Prairie Lake Resort Marina. Today we are heading down to California to do a weekend of camping at Lake Siskiyou.

Mount McLoughlin can be seen in the distance in the center. In real life the mountain stands out much more, but with a wide angle lens everything seems more distant than in reality.

Howard Prairie Lake

Twenty miles east of Ashland you will find Howard Prairie Lake. We headed up there yesterday to escape the heat and take a bike ride. At an elevation of over 4500 feet (Ashland is at 2000 feet), the temperature is usually about 10 degrees cooler.

Today’s photo is a three pic photomerge (with a wide angle lens to begin with) so it covers almost 180 degrees. If you look really closely you can see Mt. McLoughlin to the right of center.

Eastview Trail – Ashland, Oregon

The guidebooks for hiking or biking Eastview Trail talk about the wonderful views from the trail itself. Actually, there aren’t any views of the east anymore from Eastview Trail as the trees have grown since the trail was created and now the views are all obstructed. It’s still a nice trail though.

Near the trailhead, you do get a bit of a view from the location pictured here. That’s Mount McLoughlin poking up in the distance on the right.

Wrapping up the Wagner Butte Hike week

Wagner Butte Trail

As I mentioned before, I didn’t bring enough water. I had about 6 oz. left for the way down and nothing left after a mile or two of the five plus miles down. I was a bit worried that I may start cramping up and not be able to make it back to my car so I didn’t stop to take many photos on the way down.

This was unfortunate as the light was much better as you can see in the above photo, one of the few I took on the way down. Instead of a bright sun overhead, the sun was frequently obscured by clouds and/or at a much more interesting angle for photography. Next time I climb Wagner Butte I’ll either head up in the early morning, while it is still dark with a headlamp, or bring a headlamp and leave later in the day so as to come down during the sunset.

Tons of bugs attack me on Wagner Butte - Mt. Ashland in the background

Also mentioned in a prior post, there were thousands of bugs at the top of Wagner Butte circling around what appeared to be a rusted kitchen sink. I didn’t get close enough to inspect so as to avoid the bugs. Instead, I went around the edges of the butte taking photos and hoping not to catch the bugs’ attention. That worked for about a minute and then they spotted me. Immediately I was swarmed by a zillion bugs. I fired off the above photo (all of the little black things in it are flying insects), and quickly got off the butte. They left me alone at that point. Thank goodness as I didn’t want to have to share the rest of my walk back down the mountain with them.

Mt. McLoughlin from High Lakes Trail

Mt. McLaughlin from High Lakes Trail - Southern Oregon - Outdoor things to do in the Rogue Valley

Two thousand years ago andesite lava flows erupted from Brown Mountain near Fish Lake. Many of these rocks can still be seen along the High Lakes Trail. I like the change in scenery while riding a bike along this trail; one minute you are in a forest and the next you are cruising through single track with lava rocks on both sides of you.

Wrapping up this short series from Bigham’s Knoll in Jacksonville, here is the view of Mt. McLoughlin (the point covered in snow) from the top of the bell tower. Note that you normally can’t just walk up some stairs to the bell tower. I have connections. 😉
