Japanese Sunflower Houses

himawari (ひまわり) houses

While riding my bike back from Kofu to the onsen I was staying at in Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan) I came upon these houses in the dark. The street was somewhat busy for that time of night as it is the main thoroughfare (yamanotedoori or 山の手通り). I took a long exposure and let the headlights of the passing motorists light the scene for me.

Sculptures like this serve as a meeting place when tens of thousands of people are trying to find each other on game day. Things seemed eerily quiet on this day as the team wasn’t playing. Around this location there were lots of bronzed player hands that kids could “shake” or at least compare to their own hands.

One of the previously mentioned postcards was of Kinkakuji. It didn’t take me until 2013 to finally see this magnificent place, although that is when I took today’s photo. I saw this place in person for the first time in 2007.
