Kashima Honkan Fukuoka Ryokan

kashima honkan fukuoka ryokan

Kashima Honkan (Ryokan in Fukuoka, Japan )

This was the place I stayed at in Fukuoka. The price was very reasonable and the description of rustic ryokan seemed interesting. It was far from the nicest ryokan I’ve stayed in, but it definitely came through on the rustic part. This place is old by Japan standards, where most buildings are torn down and completely rebuilt every few decades. My room was large and fairly clean, but some things in the place still kind of felt like they could have used a deep cleaning. You may notice some permanent stains on things that should probably be replaced.

The location is fantastic. This place is a stone’s throw from the famous Kushida Shrine. You won’t have to walk far to get to Fukuoka’s night life, Shofukuji, or Yatai from Kashima Honkan (鹿島本館).

Shosenkyo Gorge (昇仙峡) and the Arakawa River

As previously mentioned, Kakuenbo (覚円峰) is the most common photo you see in advertisements for Shosenkyo (昇仙峡). After seeing it only in photos for 25 years or so, today’s photo shows my first glimpse of it in the flesh.

Happy Valentine’s Day

torii tunnel of love (Inuyama, Japan)

At the end of this series of torii are hundreds of heart-shaped ema. You can see them a bit better in my photo from last year’s Valentine’s Day (バレンタインデー) post.

I’m hoping for some 本命チョコ but not counting on it this year (or any year). 😉

Izakaya (居酒屋) with yakiniku in Kofu

Hanging out in a place like this on a hot summer night in Japan is one of many reasons I’m hoping to go back this summer.

BTW, the fans on the counter aren’t for the customers. They are for the cook to fan the flames just right to cook the skewered chicken.

Shirakawago inspiration

It’s photos like this one that ultimately pushed me into purchasing a DSLR (less than a year later) and shooting primarily in RAW mode. The sky was not white. It was bright, but if I could go back in a time machine and shoot this with my D750 now it would look so much better.
