Several years ago I posted a comparison of a single, ultra-wide photo of Dodger Stadium with a photomerge of several photos of the same scene. Today’s post revisits that discussion on a full-frame DSLR. Above is a 7-photo photomerge (shot vertically at 16mm). Below is the ultra-wide shot at 14mm.
Kyuji Fujikawa of the 2014 Chicago Cubs (Coors Field, Denver, Colorado)
While visiting Coors Field for the first time last year, I wondered why more than half of the photo pit was filled with Japanese photographers. I wasn’t aware of any Japanese players on either team, but that probably has more to do with my lack of interest in the National League than anything else. When Kyuji (literally “baseball child”) came trotting in from the bullpen, the photographers went crazy.
After an excellent career in Japan (196 saves and a 1.77 ERA), Kyuji hasn’t done much in MLB. He had a 5.04 ERA in two seasons with the Cubs (although he pitched in only 25 innings total–I bet the Cubs wish they hadn’t wasted $9.5M on him). He is on the DL for the Texas Rangers this year. Texas will pay him $1.1 million this season.

Today’s photo shows a better look at the previously described mullet / mohawk of Slyly (スラィリー). The smiles on the fans’ faces are the best parts of this image though.

Hiroshima Carp and Yakult Swallows fans ready for the game
Slyly, by the way, refers not to a player. Instead, Slyly is the Hiroshima Carp mascot. He looks a lot like the Phillie Phanatic, although he is a different color and has a wacky mullet/mohawk of yet another color. Slyly’s hair is not red and white like this guy’s.

In one month and one day (4/5/15) the 2015 regular season for Major League Baseball will begin. I’m not as excited as I was last year. I really loved the A’s team for the first half of 2014, before Billy Beane got greedy and thought trading away the future and favorites like Yoenis Céspedes would make the A’s better for the stretch run of 2014. It didn’t; in fact it made the team much worse. Then, in the off season, he got rid of much of what was left so we no longer have Norris, Brandon Moss, or Josh Donaldson. Hopefully 2015 isn’t a complete disaster for my A’s.
