Skull chalice (Rosenborg Castle – Copenhagen, Denmark)

This golden chalice was made for King Christian IV’s sister, Duchess Augusta of Holstein-Gottorp in 1632. The engravings on the the chalice can also be found in the illustrations of the Lutheran Strasbourg translation of the Bible, published just two years before in 1630.

Today’s photo was taken one morning on my way home from Copenhell this summer. It wasn’t just any morning; it was summer solstice. Copenhagen gets almost 11 hours of additional sun on summer solstice compared to winter solstice.

My neighbor this year is Kokkeriet, a relatively inexpensive restaurant by Michelin standards that I have yet to sample. I have been to Vesterbro Vinstue twice this year, and those bills combined were less than half the cost of one visit to Kokkeriet so that’s the main reason.
