Today’s photo comes from the grounds of the Gwangju Folk Museum. Wooden totem poles are common in Korea, but in the southern portion of South Korea you will also see stone versions. Jeju has its own kind called “dol hareubang” that look somewhat similar to this one.

Some people make a day trip to Koyasan. Big mistake. Sure the temple lodgings aren’t cheap, but the temple lodging experience (shukubo or 宿坊) is fabulous and Koyasan transforms into a different kind of magical place when the sun goes down.
