Desert Snow

Snow in Joshua Tree is not unheard of, but this much snow only happens once every few years. We were lucky to experience it as it was as beautiful as it was odd.

Czech Bear

Brown bear in Hrad Český Krumlov moat

You probably thought the title of today’s photo (assuming you saw the title before seeing the photo) was a typo.

I was surprised, not having done any advanced reading, to stumble upon this bear in the moat of the Český Krumlov Castle complex. There is a bear festival held every year on Christmas Eve here. This is the only time of the year when visitors are allowed in the enclosure. Kids feed the brown bears apples, Christmas biscuits, pastries, and honey. Of course, the kids aren’t in the moat at the exact same time as the bears or they would be on the menu as well.

Bears have been living in this moat for over 300 years. The family who owns this castle has a coat of arms featuring two bears.

Petersen Rock Garden goose boat

Petersen Rock Garden – Swan boat (March 2021)

I could find only two photos on the internet of this boat in operation–both appeared to be from the 1960s or early 1970s. Maybe this beauty had been dry docked for 50 years when I took the photo almost five years ago. Actually the wood and paint are much newer than that so maybe it had been repurposed in the fairly recent past. I don’t think the ponds/lagoon had water for about a decade until new owners took over in 2023. I haven’t been back to see the improvements.

Happy birthday, Shawn Swain!

Shawn Swain Mandolin kitchen dwellers northwest string summit-standard

Shawn Swain on mandolin for the Kitchen Dwellers @ 2022 Northwest String Summit

This photo caught my eye because of Shawn’s tattoos on his right arm. I believe it’s the “correct” instruments for a standard bluegrass band (guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and bass). The Kitchen Dwellers are missing a fiddle, and don’t usually fit the traditional bluegrass sound. I love it when they get heavy and/or psychedelic. When they lean country I’m not much of a fan.
