7-photo photomerged panorama of Árnafjørður in the Faroe Islands

I didn’t see another human during the half hour or so that I wandered around the town of Árnafjørður.

My camper van was supposed to have internet. It did not. My phone was supposed to have internet. It did not. (Orange sucks BTW. Advertised as working in the Faroe Islands, Scotland, and the Czech Republic, it didn’t work at all in the Faroe Islands or Scotland and barely worked–at super slow speeds and only sometimes–in the Czech Republic.) I was supposed to be going to a festival in the Faroe Islands. It was canceled. So I had a lot of extra time in the Faroe Islands but no way to know what to do with it. I didn’t have a guidebook. All I had was Google maps.

I drove to every place I could see on Google maps, but since I didn’t have internet, I didn’t know what would be there when I arrived or what to do in these towns. However, the Faroe Islands provided a solution. In every town, there is a really cool map/town overview sign which I would read before exploring. An example of one of these can be seen in the Árnafjørður sign below.

When I took this photo, it was raining lightly, as it had been for the past few hours. There can be only one explanation as to why this woman came out of the house to watch her husband fall to his death. I didn’t stick around for the gory part.

Whimbrel in the Faroe Islands

I went walking through the town of Kunoy on the Faroe Islands after driving through a 1988 tunnel that was drilled through a mountainside at a cost of millions so that the 64 villagers would no longer need to take a ferry. I didn’t see any of the villagers on this day. But this whimbrel and its mate didn’t want me there. They must have had a nest somewhere.

2021 G! Festival

The one festival that wasn’t supposed to be canceled this summer was the G! Festival in the Faroe Islands. Well, this is what the festival looked like on what was to be day two. Very peaceful. As if nothing was supposed to happen here.

The festival was canceled less than a week before due to Covid fears. The country was approaching a 7-day average of new cases that may have hit (are you ready for this?) double digits. That’s right the average had gone up to 7 new cases a day when they said this outdoor festival couldn’t happen. A ridiculous reason to cancel an outdoor event in my opinion, especially since most of the country is vaccinated, vaccination or a negative test was required for entry, and there has been a grand total of one, yes only one, death due to Covid in the Faroe Islands in the past year and a half. Meanwhile, instead of going to the festival, you could walk into a small, indoor bar (without any checking of vaccine status or a recent negative Covid test result) on the Faroe Islands and drink right next to 10 or 20 other people for hours before watching live music that went on indoors from midnight until 4 a.m.!

Anyway, I’m sorry the festival didn’t happen, but I’m really glad I got to visit the Faroe Islands.

 Haldarsvík faroe islands

Haldarsvík (Faroe Islands)

Haldarsvik wasn’t on my radar for the Faroe Islands, but, like many other small towns, I happened upon it on my way to another place that was (Tjørnuvík). The stone church in the village is from 1856. It is the only octagonal church on the Faroe Islands. Beautiful town with a waterfall going right through the middle. The body of water is not a fjord; that’s the Atlantic Ocean with another island on the other side.
