Testament @ Ace of Spades

death angel anthrax testament 2012 tour

Last Friday night at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California marked the first time I had seen Testament live since January 12, 1991 in Oakland at the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center. On that night they opened for Megadeth and Slayer.

The first time I saw Anthrax was in 1987. They played with Metal Church who still had David Wayne on vocals. The only difference in band members in Anthrax, from that night over 25 years ago and this past Friday night, was Rob Caggiano (on the left of today’s photo) instead of Dan Spitz. The song while I took this pic? Caught in a Mosh

The Ace of Spades in Sacramento is a nice venue in many regards. However, the doors opened just 30 minutes before Death Angel hit the stage, and some people in line missed part or all of Death Angel due to the slow manner in which customers were let in. The staff were a mixed bag–some nice and some not so friendly. Too many tickets were sold to this “sold out” show. Four, classy-looking bars line the exterior, but the place was so packed by the time Testament went on that you really couldn’t move easily. They could have sold a lot more drink, food, t-shirts, etc. if there was space for people to walk. Personally, I wouldn’t go to a “sold out” show here again. A few hundred less people, and it would have been nice though.

This tour with Anthrax and Testament continues through mostly Canada (with some US dates) over the next few weeks. Then Death Angel will headline some shows in October. I wish Death Angel was doing a headlining show in Southern Oregon. Perhaps I’ll have to make another road trip…

I headed down to Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California this past Friday to see Death Angel, Testament, and Anthrax. Unfortunately, they only gave Death Angel 30 minutes to play and that was the band I wanted to see the most.

I’ll post some more photos from the show over the next few weeks. Click here for a picture I took on my way home. The buses of the bands came up this same stretch of highway just an hour or two later I bet.

Happy Birthday to Roger Waters!
