I just got back from a quick trip to my old stomping grounds in the San Francisco Bay Area. The main purpose was to see Iron Maiden play in front of about 20,000 fans at Shoreline in Mountain View. I worked right across the street from Shoreline in the 1990s. This was my sixth time seeing Iron Maiden live but only the second time in the past 25 years. I’ll post some more photos on my other blog over the coming days.
I’m traveling at the moment (in California to see Iron Maiden tonight and catch an A’s game tomorrow) so I’m leaving you with a traveling photo. Today’s pic is an aerial view of Portland. The bridges, from left to right, are the Marquam Bridge (I-5), the Hawthorne Bridge, and the Morrison Bridge.
Allison and Victor played this past Sunday on the deck of Weisinger’s Winery.
Today wraps up SOU’s volleyball camp which has been happening this week. Last week it was a volleyball camp at Oregon State University. August will be filled with practices and tryouts for the Ashland High School team. Exciting times…
Stoneburner was amazing at Musichead a few nights ago. I think they are coming back down from Portland in late August for another show in Medford.
After a four-day break for the All-Star Game, Major League Baseball resumes play today.
I took today’s photo at Fenway Park in Boston after the game we saw a couple weeks ago.
Moments after Mother Nature unleashed about an inch of rain, today’s photo captures the view from Brooklyn of Lower Manhattan. To the far left is the Statue of Liberty and to the far right is the Brooklyn Bridge. I took this picture about an hour before taking this one.

We had some crazy weather on our trip to New York. In addition to the heat I mentioned yesterday, we had some thunder and lightning. After a downpour, I took today’s photo. We had planned to walk back over the Brooklyn Bridge (on the left) after dinner in DUMBO, but another storm hit before we finished eating so we took the subway instead.
That’s the Manhattan Bridge on the right over the East River. In the distance, you can see the new WTC 1 nearing completion.

The year was probably 1977 or 1978. I was about 9 years old. The setting was my home, and I was watching TV–not just any TV, but the NBC baseball “Game of the Week” which came on most Saturdays after “This Week in Baseball.” Mickey Rivers was the batter, and the location was Yankee Stadium. The field looked frightfully hot as the players were sweating and the sun danced off of Rivers’ helmet in strange ways. At that moment I subconsciously put a visit to Yankee Stadium on my bucket list.
Flash forward 30-something years and I was in a similar scene. Rivers wasn’t batting and Yankee Stadium got a face lift, but the sun and heat were the same. I took today’s photo (photos actually as this is a photomerge of 10 wide angle pics) 10 days ago. The reason the seats around me are mostly open was because it was brutally hot–over 95 degrees with high humidity. I could only stand it for a couple innings myself, and then I moved to a shady seat on the first base side.
Tommy Hanson was pitching for the Atlanta Braves and Derek Jeter was at bat for the New York Yankees in the above picture. I was actually much closer to the field than the photo makes things appear. The first row of the second deck (main level) is a wonderful place to sit (if the weather is reasonable) as you have tons of leg room, no one walks in front of you, and you are closer to the field than any other second deck (that I’ve been on) in baseball.
