More photos from Sunday’s solar eclipse

scienceworks eclipse party ashland oregon telescope

I just missed a photo of this baby standing at the bottom of this telescope looking up at the eclipse (with no one else in the frame). That photo was not to be as my camera was set to 1/8000, ISO 100, f/40, 340mm at the time (which worked great for the eclipse but would have yielded nothing but blackness for this view). By the time I got my D7000 to 1/100, f/2.8, 105mm a few seconds later for this photo op the scene had changed to this. Not bad, but not quite as cool.

It was a last second decision to go to ScienceWorks for the eclipse. There were many places in town I could have taken photos, and they would have all come out fairly similar of the eclipse itself. However, I decided seeing some of the people at the ScienceWorks eclipse viewing party, in addition to the eclipse, might make this a more lively evening. I also wanted to pick up some solar viewing glasses that ScienceWorks was handing out, but they were long gone (along with all of the nearby parking spaces) by the time I arrived at 6 p.m.

This woman did not move for at least 10 minutes. She appeared to be meditating. Visions of Heaven’s Gate passed through my mind.

Getting away with murder

david grubbs ashland oregon murder victim unsolved cases

Six months ago today David Grubbs was brutally murdered on Ashland’s bike path, just before the sun set, while walking home from work at Shop’n Kart. The police haven’t been able to solve the crime. The reward is now over $20,000, but it doesn’t seem anyone has any information available to claim it.

Ducks on the pond

Some Oregon Ducks for you today… These ducks aren’t from the University of Oregon in Eugene. No, these ducks were enjoying the day in Lithia Park’s Upper Duck Pond which will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary in just three more years.

Dead Indian Memorial Road Panorama

On Wednesday I had a bit of free time in the afternoon, and the clouds began to break up, so I headed up Highway 66 into the Green Springs. I was going to look for a bald eagle I heard had nested near Hyatt Lake. More on the eagle later….

On my way home I came down Dead Indian Memorial Road into Ashland and took several photos which I photomerged together to arrive at the above panorama picture.

Pear Blossoms

I picked up a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens second hand for a great price about 10 days ago. Today’s photo is one of the first photos I took with it. I’m not sure if I will keep the lens or not as I already have the Nikkor 70-200mm VRII which is a much better (albeit much larger and heavier) lens. The 70-300 seems to do fine in good lighting though. I’m not sure exactly where I was when I took this photo. I was east of I-5 and either in Phoenix, Talent, or somewhere in between. That’s Wagner Butte in the distance.

Medusa graffiti

Today’s photo comes from my San Francisco trip a few weeks ago. This Medusa art is just off of Haight Street, near the Haight-Ashbury intersection. I think it was on Masonic Avenue.

Mt. Ashland sledding

ashland oregon sledding

It’s now May so the temperatures are a bit warmer on average, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the snow or that there isn’t still a lot of snow on Mt. Ashland. In fact, there is more snow up on Mount A now (and the ski season ended on April 22) than when I took today’s photo back in January, when there was such a lack of snow on Mt. Ashland the slopes were not open for skiing. For the photo just after this one click here.

Cloudy Ashland Panorama

I went back to the same location as this prior image to give this panorama shot another try without so much sun. This time I photomerged images taken at 24mm (on a crop sensor) instead of 11mm.

There is a bird flying through this photo just right of center. I think that is Pompadour Bluff in the center.

Fox Oakland Theater

I spent the last couple days in the San Francisco Bay Area. The highlight of the trip was the Mastodon/Opeth/Ghost show at the Fox Theater, a beautiful venue built almost 100 years ago and recently restored. I’ll be posting more photos from the concert on my other blog.

Pear blossoms

One of my first test shots with my new (to me) 24-70mm f/2.8G Lens… I took this photo this past weekend right on the border of Phoenix and Talent, just north of Ashland.
