The above photo was taken on Monday, September 12, 2022. We were a bit fortunate on our trip to Mt. Rainier as the smoke situation got better, instead of worse, after we arrived on September 11. We thought about canceling but are glad we didn’t. That said, on Thursday of the same week, we did one of the most spectacular hikes in the park entirely in a cloud and, hence, couldn’t see much. A park volunteer said it was the worst day for visibility from the Sunrise Rim Trail Loop and Mount Fremont Lookout all year.
Today’s photo was taken on the trail heading to the creatively named “Beach 1” in Olympic National Park. Olympic National Park is a bit odd in that includes not only the mountain ranges that include Mt. Olympus at about 8,000 feet but also a stretch of beaches far to the west (with an area of uninteresting towns and land in between not included in the park).
