Mt. Shasta

Mt. Shasta (left) and Black Butte (far right)

I never grow tired of gazing at Mt. Shasta. I have taken about ten photos from this same location (and posted about four or five of them including this one most recently), but they all look different depending on the time of day, season, and clouds. This location, by the way, is the first (of several) official viewpoints on I-5 heading south from Oregon. I was on my way down to Oakland this past Friday when I took today’s photo.

After a huge (no pun intended) block by Sean Tow opened the hole, Jeremy Scottow was off to the races on this 11-yard carry to end the third quarter in SOU’s win over St. Xavier University on the road.

Today is the 17U mOcean Volleyball Club’s second tournament in Grants Pass (North Valley High School). At the last tournament, in Santa Clara, there weren’t any familiar foes, but most of today’s games will pit girls against former and future teammates as there is representation from about six or seven different high schools on this mOcean team.

I like the Red Fang and Saxon shirts. Red Fang needs to make it to Southern Oregon one of these days. I saw Saxon back in 1986. Saxon had gotten a bit sappy by then. I was a much bigger fan of their earlier work–especially “Power & the Glory”. Live, however, they still rocked it.

West Rim Drive in winter

Snowshoeing on Crater Lake’s West Rim Drive

Although Crater Lake’s snow pack is less than 30% of normal for this time of year, it is one of the few places in Southern Oregon with any snow. After bailing on our attempt to snowshoe near the Upper Rogue River due to lack of snow, we did enjoy a walk from the Rim Village to Discovery Point in 60 degree temperatures. Snowshoes weren’t absolutely necessary, but they were useful at times.

Sylent Storm’s farewell show is happening tonight beginning at 6 p.m. in Medford at Musichead. Gravewitch will be there. The other bands sound great as well. Should be a fun show.

Upper Rogue River in winter

Yesterday we went in search of Boundary Springs. We couldn’t find the trailhead (or maybe we did and just didn’t know it). In any event, we parked at the Mazama Viewpoint off Highway 230 as we could see no other place to park near the Mile 19 marker, which is where we read the trail is supposed to start. The sign at Mazama Viewpoint said Upper Rogue River Trail (I think). There was no internet from there, but my GPS worked fine. It looked like we could still do the Boundary Springs Trail if we could find it.

Even though there should have been tons of snow in the area, the snow was fairly minimal–especially for this time of year–so we didn’t bother to put our snowshoes on. We ended up walking on the trail for several miles before realizing we were no longer going toward Boundary Springs. At that point we turned around, walked back to our car, drove to Crater Lake, and snowshoed there.

I want to try the Boundary Springs Trail again. I saw this sign, but couldn’t read it. Apparently this is where we should have turned to get to Boundary Springs.

Today’s photo is from this past October. It was not a great day for photography as the sun never made an appearance. The rain began to fall shortly before I took this picture, and it only increased in intensity as the day continued.
