University of Redlands (California)

Once upon a time, Ellie was recruited by University of Redlands to play volleyball. She didn’t end up going there, but we did spend a few days in 100+ degree heat (and a gym that wasn’t air conditioned) exploring the option.

Red Rock Canyon (Las Vegas, Nevada)

Yesterday we did a short hike with my sister’s family to a lovely place I’d never been to before. Today we are headed to the Grand Canyon (for the first time), and beginning tomorrow night we will be in Sedona, Arizona for the new year.

If you ever want to drive the 13-mile scenic road through Red Rock Canyon, don’t go between Christmas and New Years. The road was closed due to high traffic. The only way in, around, and out was on foot. They still charged everyone to use the road which seemed rather odd.

That said, it was well worth the $3 a person price, and you’ll see more by seeing less on foot.

Happy birthday, Rickey Henderson!

Rickey was my favorite player. He turns 58 today, having been born in ’58. He was 48 when I took this photo though.

Paul McCartney @ Desert Trip

Paul McCartney @ 2016 Desert Trip playing “Band on the Run”

When I was about 11 years old I bought my first stereo with money saved from my paper route. Problem was, I didn’t have enough money left over to purchase records. However, you could check out “old” records at the library. So I headed down to the Manor Branch Library and checked out Wings’ “Band on the Run” for a couple weeks.

I didn’t imagine that I would be able to see an old band like Wings 35+ years later.
